Professor Kevin Whelan
Kevin Whelan is the Professor of Dietetics in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at King’s College London. He is a Principal Investigator leading a translational research programme exploring the interaction between diet and the gut microbiome in health and disease, including in inflammatory bowel disease and disorders of gut-brain interaction such as irritable bowel syndrome, functional constipation and functional bloating. He has published over 260 journal articles on fibre, probiotics, prebiotics, the low FODMAP diet, proteins, food additives and ultra-processed foods, and has twice been a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher.
Kevin is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition that provides independent risk assessment and advice to UK Government Departments. In 2012, he was awarded the Nutrition Society Cuthbertson Medal for clinical nutrition, in 2017, was appointed a Fellow of the British Dietetic Association, and in 2018 delivered the BDA Dr Elsie Widdowson Memorial Lecture. He was a member of the ECCO Guidelines for Diet in IBD group and recently led the ADDapt clinical trial investigating the role of food additive emulsifiers in Crohn’s disease.
